Chauvigny

A bit further away from our rental house, the market town of Chauvigny lies just over 20 kilometres east of the Vienne region's capital Poitiers. It was established by the Bishops of Poitiers and at one time had no less than five castles and four churches behind its fortified walls.The impressive 'old town' is what remains after the damage sustained during the 'Hundred Years War' and the wars of religion.

You have the option of parking down on the 'ville basse' the area by the church of Notre- Dame in the lower town and taking the healthy walk up the hill or you can drive up and park a bit closer. Whatever option you choose you will like what you see.

The 'Old Town' has been spruced up for the tourists and now provides the attractions of some nice restaurants and shops

During the summer the ruins of Chateau d'Harcourt offers a very good display by falconers "Les Geants du Ciel" that will be a treat for the kids.

Market day is Saturday and it is well worth a visit
