Loches
at only 30 minutes from
our
rental house here in the Loire Valley, is very popular with our
guests and is one of our favourite places here in the Southern
Touraine area of Centre Val de Loire. It has much to offer as it is
steeped in history due its royal patronage over the centuries.
The
town we see today is built around the old citadel which
includes
the dungeon keep, the formal royal residence and a
collegiate church.
Its
chateau and
dungeon are easily accessible and well worth a visit - at only
€8.00 joint ticket - learn of the
Richard the Lionheart connection.
The town has
a lot of bistros and restaurants. There is a good variety of
shops to found in the cobbled streets of the town.
Loches has very
popular weekly markets on Wednesday
and Saturday mornings.
The
river Indre runs through the town separating the citadel from the
town's lovely gardens which gives some great views back up to the
chateau and church.
The town is
'twinned' with Saint-Andrews
in Scotland.
