The department of the Maine-et-Loire is part of the Pays de Loire Region of France, it was created from the former province of Anjou. It is included here as the stretch of the Loire river between Saumur and Chalonnes-sur-Loire forms part of the Unesco
'Val de Loire' world heritage site.
