Barrou

The village of Barrou sits on the banks of the river Creuse in the department of Indre-et-Loire, within the region of Centre-Val de Loire in France

Our village is situated 75 km south of Tours on the D750 road between Descartes and Yzeures-sur-Creuse. This small French community within Southern Touraine is friendly and welcoming giving you a true taste of rural France.

Previous visitors to Barrou:

"The small village experience' was great and made us feel part of the landscape rather than just passing tourists."

Commerce:

Barrou has a butcher (boucher), a baker (boulanger) plus a post office/general store which are all very  much a part of the communirty.

Guest comment about the village:

"The people of the village were generally helpful particularly Willi and Sandra in the restaurant, Mme. Picot in the bakery and the lovely lady,Claire, in the shop. They stood up well to a barrage of broad Australian and very poor French. Willie & Sandra do a good lunch too and Willi makes a good pizza."

The restaurant:

The restaurant is typical of small villages of the region. Willi and Sandra serve traditional fare at good prices and it is a good place to join the locals for lunch - you will not be disappointed. Starter, main course, cheese board plus a sweet for €12.00. Local red wine and bread are included in the price. The rear seating area of the restaurant looks on to the village square. Through the season they offer the occasional live entertainment both inside and outside.

The village square:

The square is also the area for the boules players to gather throughout the week plus on the first Sunday of August it plays host to the annual  vide-greniers and brocante where you can pick up some interesting items for very few euros.

The river:

The river-Creuse plays its part in village life providing the setting for the 'Barroudours' music festival on the first Saturday of July and the 'Bastile day' fireworks on the 14th of the same month.

The Kayak/canoe club at nearby Descartes provides canoes, dropping you off to paddle back downstream to return to them. There is a very popular designated safe swimming 'beach' just outside the village by the bridge just outside nearby Lesigny. In the height of summer the river here in Barrou proves too attractive for some.

River beach at Lesigny just outside Barrou

There is a popular river 'beach park' just outside the village at the bridge before you enter nearby Lesigny. Many of our guests have enjoyed a swim/picnic here.

Although the village can often seem deserted there is normally always something about to remind you that you are in rural France and that life, at what ever pace, goes on.
