Descartes
Descartes,15 minutes from Barrou is also
set on the river Creuse, the town was
home to the famous philosopher René
Descartes ("I think therefore I am")
There is museum dedicated to him but we
wouldn't recommend it, unless you are
student of the great man.
Descartes
has a cinema, individual fashion boutiques,
a good wine shop (English spoken) plus
chemist, bank, post office and convenience
store. There are good parking opportunities
with the largest behind the tourist office.
There are
good cafes in the centre of the town where
you can people watch while having a coffee
or sampling the local wines.
The town has a very good Sunday morning
market, which is well worth a visit. For
many of our guests it is the first visit of
their holiday. There
are two supermarkets an 'Intermarche' and a
'Super U', on the edge of town, ideal for
stopping-off when travelling down from
Tours.
Descartes
has a heated outdoor swimming pool complex
which is open July and August.
(no outdoor shorts are allowed). There is
also a children's play park, crazy golf,
tennis plus canoeing on the river Cruise
is offered courtesy of the local
Kayak Club.

The town has lovely riverside gardens that
you should take in if you go to the Sunday
morning market a stroll here in the
afternoon is a good idea.
The bridge over the river Creuse.
The town has a good
tourist office, it is off to the left
as you enter the town from Barrou . As we
have said behind it is a good place to park
to visit the market.
