We discovered the church of Notre-Dame de
Ringy during a
'Journées du Patrimoine'
weekend excursion in September 2018. We
were revisiting chateau d'Usse when we saw a
small sign directing us away from the
village into the the forest towards the
church. As we drove through the windy road
deeper into the woods it seemed rather an
odd location for a place of worship. Imagine
our surprise when confronted by the site of
this grand building in the middle of
nowhere!
Why was it here? Its origins date from the
12th century but there is evidence of
previous churches and buildings dating as
far back as the 7th! You can read about its
history
here
on the site of the 'Association Notre-Dame de Rigny' from where we
got the first photograph.
As you enter the church today you are met by
the wondrous site of an exercise of
restoration in practice with a giant web of
timber supporting the main nave of the
church.
As you pass under the timbers you arrive in
the choir and transept where restoration
work includes new stained glass windows and
the revealing of frescoes from the 13th,14th
and 15th centuries.
We are glad we took the detour into the
forest as we may never have gotten to see
this very interesting building.
