The
Church of Saint Didier in the village of Cheille just over 6km to
the west of Azay-le-Rideau might normally be considered unremarkable
apart from one thing...it has a centuries-old oak that grows out of
the wall of its bell tower!
You enter this church, the earliest parts
that date from the 12th century, via a
covered portal that leads into a
rather confusing interior layout, the result
of changes made to the church over the
proceeding centuries.
There is a delightful chapel dedicated to
the Virgin Mary but no sign of out 'Joan'
As we have said it is the oak tree in the
wall that makes this church worth a visit
