The church of St. Mary Magdalene in Bréhémont occupies
what looks like a safe perch, on high ground on the
south bank of the mighty Loire river just over 10 km to
the west of Azay-le-Ridau. This 19th century church in a
neo-Gothic style is the first thing travellers will see
of the village whether approaching by road or the river.
Inside
the nave, with its wooden barreled ceiling, leads to the main
central altar.
It has a
rather ornate wooden backdrop and above it, the ceiling continues
the wood theme.
There are the familiar side chapels of the
central nave.
Where's Joan?, she has pride of place within
the main altar space where the subtle
lighting gives her the desired saintly
effect.
If you find yourself in the village you
should look in though you may not always
find it open.
